Man single handedly maintains abandoned road in Oyigbo, Rivers State.

A man identified as Alphonsius Ikem has, over the years, single handedly, voluntarily maintains and repairs a major road in Oyigbo, a town in the outskirts of Port Harcourt, that houses the Afam power station and other companies.

The Oyigbo road has a record of being one of the worst roads in the state, and the rainy season isn’t making it any better.

Speaking to our reporter, he said he has been trying to maintain the major road for 7 years, as a good Nigerian should do.

Mr Alphonsius is neither paid nor given contracts to maintain the badly damaged roads. According to him, monies given to him by passerbys is what he uses to buy stones and pay few other people that help him.

The voluntary worker, with a help of two employees and manual skills, have opened up blocked drainages to enable stagnant water on the already damaged tarred roads flow better. And making the road a bit motorable.

When asked why he has the Julius Berger name on his sign post, he replied that since the company is known for doing a good job, he decided to adopt it for his voluntary work. Hence the Julius Berger voluntary road maintenance service.
